Research Summary

I conduct basic and clinical research on the etiology and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders from the perspective of arrested psychological development, particularly during the first six years of life. Our research  includes a theoretical perspective that involves an interplay between typical and atypical development and biological and experiential factors. The various domains of early  psychological development including cognitive, emotional, motor, language and social development and their interplay in the emergence of ASD are investigated.

The objective of treatment is to re-ignite the arrested domains of psychological development, expressive language development, for example, and steer it back on to a typical course. Operant conditioning procedures, particularly the Skinnerian technique of Shaping, serve as the means of intervention and typical psychological development as the content.
