Research Coordinator Position with M.Sc. option – Personality Research

Please apply by May 1st, 2015

Dr. David Dunkley’s Personality Research Lab at the Lady Davis Institute, Jewish General Hospital is seeking a Research Coordinator to work on a new longitudinal project titled: “Perfectionism, Daily Stress and Emotion Regulation, and Well-Being.” The coordinator will work 20-30 hours per week from September 2015 to August 2016, with flexible hours. An alternative option is that the candidate will work as Research Coordinator from September to December 2015, and then transition into the M.Sc. program in Psychiatry in January 2016 to pursue a 20-month program of supervised research with some course work until August 2017. The program would increase a candidate’s competitiveness for admission to Clinical Psychology Ph.D. programs in that he/she would obtain advanced research training in a psychiatric hospital setting leading to a Master’s thesis and scholarly publications.

Brief Description of Research: Over the past three decades, self-critical perfectionism has received increasing theoretical and empirical attention as a cognitive-personality factor that increases vulnerability to a wide range of psychological problems, including depression and anxiety. However, little research has examined the mechanisms through which self-critical perfectionism is related to well-being over time. This study will examine daily stress and emotion regulation as explanatory mechanisms through which self-critical perfectionism is related to well-being over a 2-year period. The sample will be comprised of 200 adults recruited from the community through newspaper and online advertisements. Participants will complete questionnaires and an 8-day electronic experience sampling methodology (ESM) in Fall 2015 and Winter 2016, and then will complete the 8-day ESM and questionnaires at their 1-year and 2-year follow-ups during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 academic years, respectively. The findings of these studies will demonstrate the specific ways through which stress and emotion (dys)regulation processes trigger and maintain lower well-being over time for individuals with higher self-critical perfectionism, and will help guide prevention and intervention efforts to break apart dysfunctional patterns connected to distress and build resilience.

Duties: The Research Coordinator/M.Sc. student will work within the overall framework of this longitudinal study, conduct literature reviews, develop and test hypotheses, contribute to study design, prepare ethics applications and renewal, coordinate the recruitment and follow-ups, work with supporting graduate and undergraduate students, administer questionnaires to participants, become familiar with the electronic experience sampling methodology, collect data, code data, enter data, learn advanced data analytic techniques, communicate research results to scholarly audiences and the wider public, and participate in the preparation of manuscripts for publication.

Qualifications: Degree in psychology or related discipline, undergraduate research experience preferred but not required, fluency in English and French an asset

Start date: August-September 2015

Remuneration Rate: Remuneration will be commensurate with experience, length of commitment, and position (1-year Research Coordinator or 2-year Research Coordinator/M.Sc. student)

Contact: If you are interested or have any questions, please contact David Dunkley, Ph.D., by e-mail (david.dunkley@mcgill.ca) or phone (514-340-8222 ext. 5176).

Scleroderma is a chronic, autoimmune, connective tissue disorder that is characterized by fibrosis of the internal organs, thickening of the skin, and vasculopathy. For many people with scleroderma, attending support groups can be an important part of managing one’s illness and related symptoms. In the absence of a training program for leaders of scleroderma support groups, however, there is no way to ensure the quality of these groups. Thus, our team aims to develop an evidence-based training program for leaders of scleroderma support groups, to implement the training program, and to evaluate its effect on important group outcomes, and we are currently seeking a full-time research assistant to work on this project.

The tasks of the research assistant will include:

The ideal candidate will meet the following qualifications:

Salary: To be negotiated based on relevant experience and training.

Start Date: Potentially flexible.

To Apply: Please send a cover letter and curriculum vitae to Vanessa Delisle via email (vanessa.delisle@mail.mcgill.ca).
