Departmental Advisers

Students in a 90 credit program (or fewer) must declare a major.  These students are required to consult with an adviser in their major department (in this case, psychology) for approval of their course selection.  The most important function of the departmental advisers is to advise and assist students in realistic and meaningful program planning.  Departmental advisers are responsible for the degree programs which are administered by their departments.

A freshman student (97-120 credit program) will not be assigned to a departmental adviser during the first year at McGill.  Once a freshman student has fewer than 97 credits to complete, usually at the end of the freshman year, he/she will be required to declare a program.  At that point he/she will have to consult the departmental adviser for approval of the course selection.

When should you consult with a departmental adviser?

1. You should see your adviser at the very least, once per academic year in order to approve your course selection.

2. You must see your adviser whenever you want to drop or withdraw from a course which is required for your psychology program.

3. You should always consult an adviser whenever extenuating circumstances arise which may influence your academic success.  For example, if you get sick, lose your job, experience a family tragedy or suffer from psychological  or emotional difficulties.  Your adviser is there to help you decide on the best solution to your situation, and to explain the appropriate procedures involved.

4. You should consult with your academic adviser if your grades are lower than you expected.  Your adviser will discuss your situation with you, and offer suggestions as to approaches you may take to improve it.

5. You may also consult your adviser if you would like information regarding graduate studies, and/or career choices.

6. Finally, if you are feeling confused about university life, or discouraged, you may want to consult your academic adviser.  He or she may have some helpful suggestions.
