Funding for MSc in Psychiatry
Funding is available for a student to begin work in the MSc in Psychiatry program (details about the program: http://www.medicine.mcgill.ca/psychiatry/graduate.htm).
We have an exciting opportunity for a master’s student to join our investigation of the effect of the social and physical neighbourhood environment on depression in people with a chronic physical condition. The master’s student will join a team of researchers from the McGill’s Douglas Mental Health Institute and the University of Montreal’s MEGAPHONE group (Montreal Epidemiological and Geographical Analysis of Population Health Outcomes and Neighbourhood Effects). This position is funded by a CIHR grant.
Neighbourhood research is an emerging field which promises new insights into mental health promotion. The neighbourhood where people live is thought to affect mental well-being above and beyond the characteristics of individuals. People with a chronic condition are particularly vulnerable to the quality of their neighbourhood because they tend to have less mobility and rely more on their local area for services and support; yet little research has focused on this group. Our project proposes to investigate this subpopulation. We will use data from a large Canadian longitudinal health survey. The characteristics of residential neighbourhoods will be identified from census data, geospatial data and satellite imagery.
The student will be given the opportunity to work with large national datasets and will apply statistical models to clarify the effects of neighbourhood characteristics on depression in people with and without a chronic condition. The student will be involved in the literature review, analysis, manuscript writing and knowledge translation of the project. At least one publication is expected from the thesis work. Applicants should be highly motivated, have an interest in mental health and some experience with statistical software (SAS, SPSS, STATA and/or R). Candidates with experience using large datasets are especially encouraged to apply. The thesis should start as soon as possible and must be completed by October 2013.
- Available: Immediately
- Requirements: bilingual
- Applications will be solicited until the position is filled.
- Interested applicants are invited to submit a cover letter and curriculum vitae via email to Dr. Norbert Schmitz (norbert.schmitz@douglas.mcgill.ca).
