Overview of the 16 week course

Psychological Counseling

Our approach places at your disposal all the knowledge and techniques of behavioural psychology to change your attitudes about food and develop new behaviours surrounding eating. Rather than focusing upon constant deprivation with dieting, the psychologists who lead our small groups help participants develop sensible lifestyles which serve to achieve and maintain weight loss. Skills which will be taught over the 16 week course include attitude change, dealing with temptations, and planning your day to include sensible eating and exercise. As well, the psychologist talk about the role of coping with wither difficult food situations or life situations which might undercut one's self-control. The atmosphere of the group permits ample discussion and encourages our clients to develop new behaviours and ways of thinking.

Dietary Counseling
A dietician will provide up-to-date information about what one should eat both to lose weight and stay healthy. Using principles from the Canadian Food Guide, you will be taught how to choose foods and plan meals which are low in calories but high in taste and appeal. In addition to answering any questions you might have, the dietician will review a daily journal which you will maintain, and provide you with important feedback on your progress in adopting your new food habits.

Physical Exercise
In contrast to many programs which simply talk about exercise, our physical fitness instructor makes exercise an enjoyable part of each and every session. Our comprehensive approach will help you to integrate exercise into your life.

  • Americans spend 10 billion dollars a year on diet books, programs and products.
  • There may be an evolutionary basis for excess weight and the difficulty in losing weight. Since humans have been subjected to numerous periods of famine throughout history, it would have been adaptive to put on weight when food was available. Like wise, during periods of famine, it might have been adaptive for the starving body to conserve its reserves of energy and slow its metabolic rate.
  • The body responds to reductions in food intake by reducing its rate of metabolism. This is why it is actually more difficult to lose weight when dieting.
  • Repeated bouts of dieting over the course of one's lifetime may condition the body to be even more efficient at storing calories during non-dieting periods in anticipation of the next diet, or "famine." This would lead to even more weight gain when stopping the diet.
  • There is evidence that physical exercise can actually counteract the reduction in metabolic rate which accompanies dieting. In addition, the increase in metabolic rate which occurs with exercise persists for hours afterwards, so that calories continue to be burned off.
