Topics in Language Acquisition  (3 credits)


Psychological mechanisms and theories of first language acquisition in infancy and early childhood. Topics such as: infant speech perception, acquisition of grammar, word learning, pidgin and Creole languages, critical and sensitive periods, genetic and evolutionary bases of language.

Course Objectives:  To investigate the mechanisms and theories of early language acquisition.

Content:  This course, which focuses on psychological theories and acquisition mechanisms at work in during infancy and early childhood, will concentrate on a few topics selected among the following: infant speech perception, the acquisition of grammar, word learning, the acquisition of pidgin and Creole languages, critical and sensitive period effects, genetic and evolutionary bases of language. Some knowledge of the psychology of language is required.
