Advances in Visual Perception (3 credits)

(2 lectures) We examine in detail the structure of the visual system, and its function as reflected in the perceptual abilities and behaviour of the organism. Parallels are also drawn with other sensory systems to demonstrate general principles of sensory coding.

Instructors: Fred Kingdom, Kathleen Mullen
Time: MW 13:05-14:25
Location: EDUC 216

Content:  The aim of the course is to examine in some detail the structure of the mammalian visual system, drawing on recent data obtained from neurophysiological, psychophysical (perceptual) and brain imaging techniques. Parallels will be drawn with other sensory systems to demonstrate general principles of sensory organisation. We will consider each level of visual processing from receptors to prestriate cortex, and discuss the extent to which the visual system is divided into separate 'modules', each with its own specific function (eg. colour, motion, stereo- depth).
